Is the Goal Really for All of Our Chakras to Be 100% Open and Stay There?

If your heart or sacral chakra reached 100% openness and stayed there, you would likely feel exhausted and depleted. Similarly, a fully open third eye chakra all the time could leave you overwhelmed by constant energy and information.
The truth is that spiritual growth and a healthy, fulfilling life come not from keeping chakras fully open, but from balance. Our chakras are dynamic—they spin, open, and close in response to our energy, experiences, and environment.

Chakras Are Always Moving
Chakras are not static. Even when you’re sitting quietly, they are spinning and generating electromagnetic energy. They also naturally open and close depending on:
Your experiences
Your environment
The energy present in your field
Some metaphysical teachings suggest that enlightenment or awakening means opening all your chakras to 100% and keeping them there. But just like your physical body thrives on movement—blood flow, exercise, and lymph circulation—your energetic body thrives on change and adaptability.
Stagnancy, even in the form of a chakra permanently “wide open,” is not beneficial.
While there are moments when fully opening a chakra is useful, this shouldn’t be the default state for your entire life.
Examples of Chakras Opening and Closing Naturally
Chakras adjust naturally based on your actions and surroundings. Here are some examples:
Crown Chakra: When attending a spiritual service, sermon, or other faith-based experience, your crown chakra may naturally open to absorb divine guidance. Once you leave, it adjusts, closing to a level appropriate for your next activity.
Solar Plexus Chakra: Athletes in competition naturally engage this chakra, which governs ego, drive, and performance. After the event, it closes again.
Sacral Chakra: During intimate moments, the sacral chakra opens more fully. Afterwards, it partially closes, depending on the individual and the context.
Think of chakras like a camera lens—the aperture opens and closes to let in just the right amount of energy, depending on the moment.
When 100% Openness Can Be Overwhelming
Any chakra, if left fully open all the time, can create challenges. For example:
Third Eye (6th) Chakra
Having it fully open during everyday activities—running errands, cleaning, or other routine tasks—can be destabilizing.
You may feel flooded with information, making it difficult to ground or notice your physical environment.
Many people new to psychic or spiritual development aspire to a constantly open third eye, thinking “more is better,” but it can be exhausting and overwhelming.
It can be beneficial to open the 6th chakra fully in meditation, during intuitive readings and healings, or other dedicated spiritual practices.
Heart (4th)Chakra
Full openness is beautiful and transformative in moments of emotional connection or healing.
Constant openness can lead to over-giving—ignoring your own needs and boundaries.
You risk exhaustion by giving past your capacity.
It can be beneficial to open during meaningful connection or acts of service, but allow it to naturally adjust in daily life.
Sacral Chakra
For intuitive readers, energy healers, or mediums, a fully open sacral chakra can cause you to unintentionally absorb others’ emotions and physical sensations.
While connecting with another person’s energy is powerful, staying in this state all the time can lead to physical, emotional, and mental burnout.
Becoming "Chakra Aware"
With time and practice, you can consciously perceive and adjust the degree of openness of your chakras. Learning to perceive your energy centers allows you to:
Open or close chakras as needed
Maintain energetic balance and personal sovereignty
Protect your mental, emotional, and physical well-being
For intuitive readers and energy workers, this means:
Turning down the lower "body" chakras to avoid taking on someone else’s energy
Reading and working through upper chakras
Creating balance and sustainbility in your practice
Moving Toward Balance
Balance—not constant openness—is key to thriving spiritually and physically.
By observing your energy and focusing attention on your chakras, you can regulate their openness according to:
The space you’re in
The activity you’re doing
Your personal energy needs
