Why Digital Spaces Can Feel So Draining
Many sensitive people, myself included, find it difficult to spend time on social media. You’ve likely seen countless articles and posts about the downsides of being online, and in recent years, more and more people have started stepping away from certain platforms because they no longer feel safe or healthy.
But why is that—energetically speaking?
When we’re consuming media in any digital space, our awareness often gets sucked into the experience. It moves out of our bodies and into the device—the phone, the computer, or the television. You’ve probably noticed that when you’re scrolling, it can feel like you’re no longer aware of your surroundings. That’s why there are reminders not to text and drive or to look up when crossing the street.
Your awareness has literally left your body and entered the digital space.
Being "Aware of Your Awareness"
To thrive online, it’s important to become aware of your awareness. That might sound funny, but our awareness is the aspect of our higher self—the part of our eternal soul—that lives within our body during this lifetime.
We are happiest, healthiest, and most vital—physically, mentally, and spiritually—when our awareness is fully anchored in the body and when we’re running on our own energy and information.
Of course, throughout the day, our awareness naturally dips in and out. That’s normal. Think about daydreaming: maybe you’re sitting at your desk and suddenly imagining your next vacation. In your mind’s eye, you’re already on that beach, feeling the sun and the ocean breeze. In that moment, your awareness has left your body and entered an astral version of that scene. Then, all at once, you come back—you’re aware of your desk, your workspace, your environment again.
This isn’t harmful by itself, but when it happens constantly—especially while we’re online—it can leave us feeling ungrounded and disconnected.
The same thing can happen when you think about someone or a past or future conversation. Your awareness can drift toward that person or situation. You’re not doing it intentionally—it just happens, especially if there’s emotional charge behind it.
If you’ve ever “gone unconscious” during a guided meditation—where you suddenly realize you’ve lost track of the speaker’s voice—that’s another example of your awareness leaving your body. It often happens when you hit unconscious energy or resistance in your field.
When you reconnect with the voice, that’s the moment your awareness returns.
Grounding While Using Social Media
Now imagine spending hours with your awareness out of your body—absorbed in your phone or computer. That’s what happens when we scroll endlessly, watch videos late at night, or jump between comment threads.
As sensitive souls, we’re most vital when we’re grounded and present within ourselves.
So when you’re online, pause occasionally and ask yourself:
Do I have a sense of my feet on the floor?
Can I feel my body in the chair?
Am I aware of my physical presence?
If not, gently bring your awareness back into your body. You might set your phone down, take a few breaths, and let your energy re-center.
I had to retrain myself to keep my awareness in my body while engaging with digital spaces. Sometimes, it still takes a conscious effort to stay grounded—and that’s okay. Stepping away and returning when you feel centered makes a big difference.
If you’re not sure how to do this, I offer a free workshop called Awaken Your Awareness that walks you through grounding and bringing your awareness fully into your body.
Be Mindful of the Media You’re Consuming
We’re constantly in exchange with the energy of people, places, and things—including online spaces. The question is: whose energy are you engaging with when you’re consuming media?
Your body will often tell you if something you’re reading, watching, or listening to isn’t aligned - you might feel tension, pressure, or discomfort—perhaps in your gut, your head, or your face. Emotions, too, are communication from your body.
So when your body gives you a cue—maybe a headache or heaviness—that’s valuable information. It’s a sign to step away, ground yourself, and disconnect from external input for a bit.
That doesn’t necessarily mean some media is “bad” and others are “good.” It’s about resonance.
There’s energy and information that aligns with your current path and some that doesn’t. If something doesn’t align, your body will let you know—if you’re paying attention.
Clearing and Separating from Outside Energy
Even when you’re consuming uplifting or helpful information, it’s important to clear your space regularly. Take time to separate from anything that isn’t yours and release other people’s energy.
Grounding is my go-to tool for this. At the end of each day, I ground myself and release any energy that’s not mine—whatever I’ve read, watched, or listened to. It only takes a few minutes and helps me feel more peaceful and relaxed.
I also have a video on my channel that guides you through a simple and powerful tool to separate from other people’s energy. It’s especially helpful after deep dives online or intense social media interactions.
If you’ve ever watched something and then dreamt about it later, that’s a sign your awareness didn’t fully disconnect from it. Clearing your space before sleep helps ensure a calm and clear dream experience.
Energetic Protection in Digital Spaces
Energetic protection is essential for sensitive souls, especially in a world of constant digital communication. When you’re exposed to so many people’s experiences, it’s easy to absorb their emotions, struggles, or pain.
While compassion is beautiful, it’s not healthy to take on suffering that isn’t yours. It can distract from your own healing and from the unique ways you’re meant to serve.
Psychic protection isn’t about fear—it’s about sovereignty. It’s the intention to keep your energy in your space and let others keep theirs.
Protection practices can be customized to what feels natural and empowering for you. For me, maintaining this boundary has helped me build a healthier relationship with social media and supported my mental, emotional, and energetic well-being.
Calling Your Energy Back
We always have the power to shift and change our energy for our benefit at any time.
If you’d like a tool to help with that, I have a simple and powerful meditation that guides you through calling back your energy and life force from wherever it may have scattered.
I recommend doing this whenever you log off or end your day online.
You’ll feel clearer, more present, and fully yourself again.
